Who we are
We began in 2019 as a family hobby-stead. At the time, our goal was simply to figure out how to feed ourselves off the land we were blessed with. What began as the relatively small endeavor of putting food on our own table, quickly turned into a passion much larger than we ever anticipated. While hunting–and even gathering to a lesser extent–was already in the DNA of our family, we found that providing food through farming bore a weight and significance we had never encountered.
Raising a healthy animal takes a lot of heart. You spend so much time tending them and caring for their needs. You contemplate tirelessly how to improve your operations so that the animals can be happier and healthier, and thus more productive. You watch their habits and inspect their progress each day. And then suddenly, the harvest comes. In a singular moment, you watch the life pass from the animal you cared for so diligently.
And it becomes food.
There is perhaps no way to express the intermingling of remorse and joy that accompanies a harvest day. It is a stark reminder of the preciousness of life and the inevitability of death. The air feels more real in your lungs and the dirt more solid beneath your feet. The earth itself seems to slow and you see, for a moment, things as they truly are.
For us, we realized we were made for this and that it was the life we wanted our kids to grow up with. All that was left was to take the dream of a family hobby-stead, and make it not just a hobby, but a life for our family. Thus, we founded Poiema Farm.
